Extend Prep and Press/Alternating Target Area

designed by Michael Seeklander

Range: 5yd – 10yd

Target: body zone (IPSC A-zone, IDPA -0 zone, 8″ circle, etc.) and head zone (IPSC A-zone, 3×5 card, etc.)

Start position: high ready (where hands meet after draw)

Rounds fired: 40

This is a Changing Gears type drill designed to get you focused on making proper choices in terms of your visual control of the pistol as you alternate between high- and low-percentage targets. It comes from Michael Seeklander’s Your Defensive Handgun Training Program.

  1. From High Ready on the sound of the timer, extend the gun while managing the sights and trigger (visual shift and verification), and fire two (2) shots on the body.
  2. On the next repetition go through the same process and fire two shots on the head.
  3. Alternate back and forth between target areas for a total of 20 repetitions (10 to the body, 10 to the head).

When assessing hits, each target area should have 20 shots on it.
