This week, we’re going to work on combining some of the skills that have been the subject of recent DotW’s. In particular, we’re going to work on strong hand only (SHO) and weak hand only (WHO) shooting along with the reload.
Put up a large target (such as a paper plate or 8.5×11 sheet of paper) at a range of seven yards. Set your shot timer to a PAR time of 10 seconds.
Begin with a total of five rounds in your pistol, and a spare magazine on your belt. Starting position is with the pistol in the ready position strong hand only.
On the buzzer, fire five rounds at the target strong hand only. Then (using both hands) perform a reload and transition the gun to your weak hand. Fire five more rounds at the target weak hand only.
Adjust the drill as necessary to be challenging but not impossible.
- If you easily got all 10 hits in 10 seconds, lower the PAR time.
- If you didn’t have any misses but didn’t fire all the shots in time, increase the PAR time.
- If you had a lot of misses, move the target closer.
(as with previous drills involving transfer from one hand to the other, please remember to be careful. If you should drop the gun during the drill, let it fall to the ground and do not try to catch it in midair. If you try to catch it, the odds are very good that you’ll snatch the trigger and discharge the gun accidentally)
Training with firearms is an inherently dangerous activity. Be sure to follow all safety protocols when using firearms or practicing these drills. These drills are provided for information purposes only. Use at your own risk.
