The Federal Bureau of Investigation has selected a new, improved version of Winchester’s bonded T-Series ammunition for its agents to carry in caliber .40 S&W. The 180gr bullet was designed specifically to meet the FBI’s extensive testing protocol which puts a premium on penetration through a variety of barriers such as car doors, windshields, and wallboard. According to a source at the FBI, the round scored better “than anything we’ve ever tested in any caliber.”
The round will become available through normal Winchester law enforcement distributors and dealers beginning in February of 2008. (thanks to BrokenArrow for tracking down the details)
The 5-year, $54M contract covers both duty and training ammunition, making it the largest single ammunition contract in federal law enforcement history.
For more information, you can read the Winchester Law Enforcement Division press release.
A similar announcement for the selection of the FBI’s 9x19mm training and duty ammunition is expected shortly.
Will be interesting to see how the performance of the enhanced bonded differs from the previous bonded load, and how it differs from other premium loads.
Others might not score the way the FBI does. ICE/CBP have been issuing ammo for yrs that the FBI thinks is poor, they think is excellent.
The FBI thought the Federal 165 HS scored way better than the Remington and Federal 155 JHPs for example.
