Federal/AE .45 Ammo Recall

ATK (parent company of Federal Cartridge Company as well as Speer and CCI) has issued a recall of certain lots of .45 Auto ammunition. The recall affects the following types of ammunition:

  • AE45A — 230gr American Eagle FMJ
  • AE45N1 — 230gr American Eagle TMJ Indoor Range
  • AE45A250 — 230gr American Eagle FMJ (250rd bulk pack)
  • GM45B — 185gr Federal FMJ/SWC
  • 45C — 185gr Federal Hi-Shok JHP
  • 45D — 230gr Federal Hi-Shok JHP
  • C45C — 185gr Federal Personal Defense JHP
  • C45D — 230gr Federal Personal Defense JHP

The ammunition is only subject to recall if it comes from one of the following series of lot numbers:

38X628 through 38X765

38T401 through 38T414

The recall is related to a propellant issue that has the potential to be dangerous. If you own any ammunition covered by the recall, contact Federal immediately at 1-800-831-0850 and do not shoot the ammunition. Federal will replace the ammunition at its expense as well as absorb the cost of returning the recalled ammo to them.

Almost all of the ammunition I shot last year through my HK45 was from ATK, and much of it was the AE45A250 listed above (though not from a lot affected by the recall). I’ll be shooting another 50+ thousand rounds of ATK ammo again this year. The company’s long history of stepping up to protect customers — even at the expense of a major recall — is just one reason why Federal, Speer, and CCI ammunition continues to be trusted at Casa Pistol-Training.

  1. It is this kind of customer service which will make me buy their products. Thanks for the heads up.

    You tease, you.

  2. I am glad that ATK has served you well. I had a very opposite experience with Federal last year. I was having a lot of issues with split brass and it took several emails to even get a response. When they finally did respond, they simply asked that we (my brother and I) send some samples in for them to analyze. We did and never heard from them again. Since my brother and I reload, having split brass after one firing sucks. I have since stopped buying Federal ammo. I think I shot about 10K rounds last year so it isn’t like I am an important customer but still it would have been nice to have a quicker reply and to then have had some sort of follow up.
here is a link to a photo of the brass:
