It was a busy week. First, Jack Leuba of F2S Consulting & I taught the Free Veterans Day Shooting Clinic, sponsored by SKD Tactical and Ready Tactical. That was followed by two full days of practice with friends at the range. It was cold, it was warm, it was rainy, the gun never saw any extra lubrication or cleaning… no stoppages.
Putting in three straight days on the range with awesome shooters quickly reminds you that nothing improves your shooting like shooting with good shooters. Folks like Jack and JV push you to your limit every time you draw your gun. Let’s face it, we’re competitive by nature. When you step up to the plate rack, or a dueling tree, or any timed/measured drill it’s not practice anymore. It’s time to get dialed in and deliver… or fail.

We also ran the F.A.S.T. each day. For the first time I can remember, I got two back to back sub-5 second clean runs on camera:
The sight combination I mentioned last week is serving very well. In strong sunlight, the orange dot is almost too bright. The first drill I ran outdoors had me literally blinking and turning my head away because my eyeballs were unprepared for the assault. But as the weekend went on, just about everyone in our practice group gave them a try and there are a lot of guys looking forward to these being released. AmeriGlo, I think you’ll be hearing from a lot of P30 owners between now and SHOT, too.
A couple of shooters also borrowed the backup gen4 G17 and put a combined 611 rounds through it, bringing its total round count to 1,261 with no stoppages so far.
As you can see, the test is almost to the 50,000 round mark. With just a couple of weeks to go, we’re faced with a tough decision. Keep going or move on to something different?

My vote is for a hi-cap Bersa thunder 9. I’ve seen video of them being tested, and continuously fired past 1500 rounds in ten minutes. I’m curious to see how far one would go!

Absolutely the PPQ! I think it meets a lot of the requirements for solid, practical defense pistol: reliable and accurate (from initial user reports), ergonomic (somewhat subjective), good capacity, available in standard cartridges for practice, affordable for the common man and comes from a great lineage (P99, etc). From what I have seen, it is a quality firearm that has stepped on to the same field that the Glocks and HKs like to play on. With the very P30-ish grip, the paddle-type mag release, the extended slide release, it would most likely be very similar to one of your favorites, the P30, but still completely different. I’m betting that it would actually be a very enjoyable pistol for you to test.
Its all there – new firearm, waiting to prove itself, a host of great features, and getting good initial reviews of accuracy and reliability. I’d love to see a test of how it performs over the long haul!

+1 on Walther PPQ or a Sig like the P220, P226, or P229
I vote for staying with the Gen 4 17, because if nothing breaks in 75,000 we have proven that nothing has broken after 75,000 rounds. (See what I did there?)
If not, a 226/229 would be cool, but now your going to have to be greasing/lubing/cleaning gun a lot more… From what I understand, not your forte. (dont know how to mae the little hash mark thingy)
What next?
Let’s start up with STI’s GP6 (aka Grand Power K100 from Slovakia).
Run an XDM-9. It gets maligned enough on most of the boards to deserve a shot at an endurance test. It would be interesting to see what people would say if it turned out to be a good gun…
I vote following your 2012 goals with your preferred pistol, or 25,000 rounds on the Walther PPQ.
Sig 229 with the SRT.
You say it is very shootable so it will help achieve 2012 goals.
And you’ll get to verify the SigSauer quality control issues.
I’d vote for an XD(m) or something a little more unusual like a Taurus 24/7 or a IWI Jericho.
I would like to see you run the G17 to 100 000.
I’ll add another vote for testing the Walther PPQ.

I would enjoy watching the test continue to 100,000 rounds. Maybe see a good ending to a rough start?
I would also like to see the a glock go a little longer, but would very much like to see a PPQ(or PPS). The Walthers seem to be the only other interesting pistols on the market besides Glock or HK, at least IMO.
I would also like to see you test an XD/XDm of some sort. Not for any other reason than to have some solid data to reference when guys I work or shoot with are thinking of getting one as a carry gun.
I vote call it quits with the Glock after 50,000, there’s no more surprises in store there. Next up I vote some type of 1911, don’t care which, maybe an STI, heck a S&W E-Series would be fine, or even a Colt Government. I for one am eager to see how the old stand-by stands up!
I would like to see the PPQ or maybe one of the new Sig E2 models. However taking the Glock further wouldn’t be boring either. Just keep posting videos of you shooting that make me want to hang myself and it’s all good. 🙂

I say go on to something else, I nominate the Beretta PX4 or Walther PPQ.
FWIW, some of our Glock 17 range guns have over 300,000 rounds through them. We wore; out extractors, usually replace a broken trigger pin at over ~ 160,000 rounds, the slide stop spring eventually wearing out. Clean and lube when we absolutely have to.
Seem to recall a couple of the very, very early 1st Gens had a hairline crack at ~5 o’clock position but they still shot.
Very cost efficient choice for us.
Edit. Crack at 5 o’clock position on the ejection port.
