  2. I think Kathy Jackson is spot on, with one minor amorphous caveat. Sometimes the best – perhaps the only – way to reveal secondary ignorance is to try and answer someone’s question and realize your rationale doesn’t quite go all the way from A to B. It’s the foundation of knowledge Kathy is talking about that will help bridge the gap in logic, but in any sufficiently complicated subject, I don’t think there’s any rigidly quantifiable criteria that designates you as qualified to teach. The stakes are much higher here, due to safety concerns, but there are still times when you have to find yourself out of your league to realize you’re out of your league.
