Conventional wisdom seems to be that it is not a great idea to carry a gun while riding since it can contribute to your injuries in the case of a crash. I know friends who carry their gun in their tank bag or backpack, rather than risk adding to their problems in a crash. I cannot fault them, but I cannot bring myself to follow their example. I have been carrying AIWB, but using a smaller gun like a P30SK. My thought was that it would at least minimize the area affected if the gun was smaller than my usual carry gun.
On my last motorcycle trip from PA to NYC, I found my AIWB setup to be a little less comfortable than usual. Riding for an hour or two has never been a problem, but on a 5 hour ride, it started to become an issue. This made me think that switching to a strong side carry might make more sense while on the bike. It would remove the discomfort caused by my closed hip position and it would allow me to unzip my riding jacket at stops without exposing my pistol. One problem is my hip pads can get in the way of an IWB holster.
For those of you that ride, do you carry? If so, how do you prefer to do so? I have always skipped the spare mag while riding, but other than going to a smaller gun, have tried to keep things the same as much as possible. If you don’t carry, I can understand that, but I prefer to have my gun on me at stops. Let me know how you handle this somewhat specialized situation.
