Well, the 20,000 round point is nothing but a memory.
Yes, it took a little longer than previous tests (12 weeks for the P30 and just 10 for the M&P). But the plan was always to go a little slower with the .45, simply for the sake of my wrists and elbows. Still, in 42 range sessions so far, more than 10% of them have involved shooting 1,000+ rounds. The one-day record so far was 1,302… that’s over sixty pounds of .45 ammo!
The gun was finally cleaned, as mentioned last week. I snapped some photos of the gun in its 10k-rounds-dirty state, but to be honest none of them looked unusual. There simply wasn’t anyplace on the gun that accumulated a lot of gunk. Though to be honest, I didn’t even bother to detail strip the pistol…
A very well known gun/internet personality shot with me a bit earlier this week and put a couple hundred rounds through the HK45 test gun. I’m not sure if his trip to the Northern Virginia area is Top Private so I won’t spill the beans, but he may. I will say this, though: he’s famous enough that people came up to our table at dinner and asked for his autograph.
Now that we’re starting with a freshly cleaned pistol, I’m also trying out a new oil. The folks at Crusader Weaponry sent me some of their Slipstream Weapons Lubricant, both the oil and the grease. It will get applied before the next range session and we’ll see if it does as good a job as the Militec-1 I’ve been using forever. Which means I’ll probably have to detail strip the pistol to apply the grease, which I should have thought of beforehand, huh?
With a full month before I need to do any traveling for classes, the round count should start to build quickly again over the next few weeks. We should be at 25,000 within two or three weeks, at which point I’ll post an in-depth review of the pistol as well as a comparison with the 9mm cousin, the P30.

Yeah, keep the boring zero problem all the way to 100k. I’m glad I use such a reliable weapon as my carry gun.

We’re well into “statistical freak” territory at this point. I know I’d have run into a round of American Eagle with the primer seated backwards by now…
As a long time fan of .45 caliber HK pistols, I am very pleased the gun made it to 20k without complications.
Tam — I’ve had two rounds of the CCI Blazer that were well below OAL, but neither of them made it into a magazine. But for the record, I don’t count obvious ammo-induced stoppage against the gun (though I do report them).
I have been predicting all along that this gun would run like this. It is a tank.

The grease is outstanding stuff.
Glad you’re HK is holding up. Most of the major police agencies that went to the HK pistols in the past ten years have transitioned to a more durable weapon as they fell apart after normal duty useage. The Miami-Dade Police Dept although not issuing these weapons, allowed the HK which was very popular. They broke down often and getting parts to repair them was extremely difficult. They are good pistols for light personal use but didn’t hold up well for duty use.

D. Foust — I’ve been dealing with LE agencies and military units big & small for many years and durability issues with HK pistols is certainly not a normal thing. The issue with getting replacement/repair parts was certainly a huge problem for years. HK has been working hard to improve that, and if you read HKPRO.com you’ll see that most current inquiries have ended very well.
I’m unaware of the Miami-Dade issue. As Tam said, can you provide a source?

I really like using the oil on my .22 autos.
I think it’s awesome that when Todd said “people asked for his autograph” everyone thought of actual famous people like R. Lee Ermey or Rob Pincus. It wasn’t anyone that awesome, just some reality TV contestant. 🙂

(BTW dont let that stuff get on any of your clothing cause wifey will kill you if it gets in the wash and everything turns slipstream colored!)
