A very fun, educational, and successful week at Rogers Shooting School proved no challenge for the M&P. Over two thousand three hundred and fifty rounds without any stoppages … or any preventative maintenance during the week, either!
As mentioned previously, three of our five instructors were using Smith M&Ps, including Mr. Bill Rogers himself. It’s hard to imagine a stronger endorsement than choosing the gun for teaching to students.
An article about the school will be finished later this week, but if you click on the image to the left you can see a video taken during the low-light portion of the class. The Insight Tech-Gear XTI Procyon strobing weaponlight and Crimson Trace Lasergrips definitely made the night fire a breeze.
How did the gun perform? Well enough to earn an “Advanced” rating, and more importantly the highly coveted red pin Rogers gives to those who score “Top Shooter” for the week. This was my third trip to Rogers but the first time I came home with that pin. The Warren Tactical rear sight delivered an exceptional sight picture for finding and knocking down those plates in the half second exposure times they were visible.
The pistol was cleaned and lubricated Sunday night before class began, and that was it. There was no cleaning or additional lube during the whole class. Militec-1 did a great job keeping the pistol running day after day in the dust and the rain.

The action job was done by a local armorer who unfortunately doesn’t do work for the “public.” However, both Dan Burwell and David Bowie are capable of doing the same basic work, and they’re both commercial companies.

I may have missed it, but what front sight are you running on your M&P?
Whatever you are doing to your M&P, go break into my house and tell my wife you are allowed to take mine and have it fixed. Though, you would probably have to open the safe for her. She doesn’t know how.
Nice shooting by the way. Our Rogers range does not have the scoring system set up just yet, so I can only tell when I screwed up badly. Hopefully in the future, it will be fixed. And maybe someday find enough time in my life to Hit Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood. Good Job on the Pin.
Wayne — Smith cut the base of a 3rd Gen S&W semiauto for me so it would fit an M&P dovetail. Apparently, the 3rd Gen guns had taller sights.
Sean — Rogers Shooting School doesn’t using the automatic scoring stuff, either. You paint the targets after every run, and your partner/coach (the other guy on your lane) counts your hits.
How does one engage the strobe mode on the Procyon? From what I read you can either do momentary strobe or constant on strobe.

If there is a constant strobe feature, I haven’t figured it out. RTFM, I suppose! The momentary strobe mode is achieved by quickly tapping the activation lever down and then holding it down after it resets. It’s like a double tap and you hold it down on the second tap. As long as you hold it down on that second tap, it keeps strobing. Let off on the switch and you need to double tap again to get back to strobe mode. I’d much prefer the strobe mode be the default and the momentary be the more complicated activation, and have made that suggestion to Insight.

Now, what happens when you let the lever back UP in strobe mode? Light goes out completely?
JLM — Correct. Once you release pressure on the lever, the light goes out.
Did you find that double tapping for strobe disturbed your sight alignment?
It must not have because it sounds like you cleaned the classes clock but 🙂
