M&P Monday: Week Fourteen

28,450 rounds
2 stoppages, 0 malfunctions, 0 parts breakages

Another “no news is good news” week has gone by in the M&P Torture Test. Over 2,200 rounds fired without any mishap.

Friday the gun was put through its paces for accuracy on the 50yd range, mostly to test the JohnO High Visibility Sight at long range for maximum accuracy. Rounds were hitting about one inch low at that distance, still keeping most shots inside the 6″ target zone. Average group size offhand was about 5″ for 5-shot groups.

The Performance Center sear + Massachusetts trigger is absolutely perfect for a carry gun. Trigger pull is about six pounds with a smooth press and incredibly fast reset. I shot a student’s M&P9 (with standard trigger) during a class this week and was reminded just how much I prefer the PC+MA setup!

See you again next week!

Train hard & stay safe! ToddG

  1. I just picked up a M&P9 over the weekend and this website actually helped me to make my choice. I have a few questions about some of the changes made to the M&P9 used in the torture test:

(1)Is a Massachusetts trigger an actual trigger or is it an adjustment to the settings?

(2)What is a performance center sear?

(3)Are these changes necessary or user preference?

  2. Todd,

Just sent my M&P9 off to David Bowie for a trigger job, but now you have me thinking that I might want to go with the PC+MA setup. I’m an old wheel gun man. How does this setup compare with a good double-action revolver trigger?

    Thanks

  3. Mike B — It’s actually the MA-compliant trigger bar and trigger spring, which are different parts than the standard ones. They’re used in the gun to meet Massachusetts’ product liability laws, and increase the trigger pull. The Performance Center sear is just a different sear that S&W puts in the M&P9 Pro, it reduces the trigger pull and makes the reset more positive. The combination of the MA trigger bar/spring and PC sear is my personal preference.

Pepper — The combo I’m using gives a very strong, forceful trigger reset and more resistance in the trigger pull during the take-up, so in that respect it’s much closer to a DA revolver trigger. Bowie can, if you want, use the MA-compliant trigger bar & spring in conjunction with his normal action job to achieve basically the same results as I’m getting with the PC sear. In fact, Bowie can probably fine tune your trigger pull weight a little higher or lower based on exactly how he works the sear during the trigger job.

  4. Todd, Where can a guy get the MA compliant trigger bar and spring?

    S&W says “factory installed only.”

    Thanks

    Stuart

  5. Todd, Would it put the PC+MA ‘upgrade’ in the same class as a Glock with a NY1 trigger? From what I’ve witnessed with my Glock 22 with the NY1 trigger is that it has more resistance in the trigger press but makes the trigger reset quicker and more positive.

    Thank you
    Sean

  6. SeanG — Yes, it’s the same concept. The M&P still won’t have as positive a reset as the Glock, though.

  7. Todd,
Thanks for that very quick response. I take it I’d have to ship the M&P back to Smith for this change or any reputable Smith armorer could get the parts and install them.

  8. SeanG — Last I knew, Smith was not selling the necessary parts. The S&W Performance Center will utilize those parts when performing a trigger job, however, if requested.

  9. G19 4th Generation should be the next test. So many problems have been reported we need to see an independent test if its really as good as you say.

  10. Hey Todd, silly question but if I purchase the MA complaint M&P hand gun then it would already have the MA complaint trigger bar and spring installed correct? then I would just need to get the Performance sear install right?

  11. Forgot to ask in my question the M&P package will pretty much fix it up find with the MA complaint handgun. Thanks
