With 25,000 rounds right around the corner, things are fairing very well with the gun. More than a dozen different people have test fired it without any problems whatsoever.
Another change to the sights this week, and one which will no doubt receive a lot of happy attention: we received the prototype Warren Tactical tritium night sight for the M&P. The front dot is a large green tritium capsule, while the rear dot is a smaller, dimmer orange capsule. The result is a very clean sight picture during the day, and an easy to align 2-dot pattern in reduced lighting. Regular production is expected soon and we at pistol-training.com expect the Warren Tactical night sights to become more and more popular.
The pistol was cleaned today for the first time in over 5,700 rounds … so the commitment to keep the gun clean has sort of gone by the wayside. As you can see from some of these photos, the gun got pretty dirty. But with nothing more than the occasional drop of Militec-1 on the rails and barrel it kept running perfectly. Thanks go out to Russ and the gang at Militec for providing all of the oil used in the Torture Test so far.

does the warren rear have a white outline around the vial? the m&p in the test is your daily carry weapon? don’t you worry even a little that if you go too long without a cleaning and inspection that there could be an issue like the split rail in the other one you’re not aware of which could effect it’s performance should you need it? i know that question contains a certain amount of “speculative paranoia”.
David — The Warren rear dot has a very narrow silver outline, which I assume is required since the tritium capsule is made of metal.
I’m carrying the gun every day. With the exception of two stoppages caused by things I did when cleaning it hasn’t had a bobble. The fact that it continues to run when abused gives me more confidence, not less.
And for the record, when my first M&P’s slide broke, the gun continued to fire for hundreds of rounds. For all I know, it would have gone on for many more. I didn’t discover the break until after a shooting session when I cleaned the gun. See the pattern here? Cleaning gun brings me bad luck. 8)
Damn, I sure wish he’d do these for Sig’s. But….I think I’ve said that before…jeap pretty sure….

Thanks for the update! As the MP-Pistol forums seem to be expired, for hopefully a short time, please keep us up to date on the Warren tritium sights. I can’t wait to get a set.
BNH, I think you are right. When you try to hit the forum now, the message you get is: “The domain mp-pistol.com has expired.” It sounds like they’ve intentionally taken it down. So for now, in addition to Todd’s blog here, I’m wondering if there are other forums or sites that have a strong component of M&P discussion.
We discuss M&Ps over at CALIBERS fairly regularly, they seem to be pretty popular among the small crowd there. Link available on the pistol-training.com home page.

Its weird that you say the cleaning brings the bad luck…..all five or so stoppages in 4000 + rounds in my MP40 happened on a fresh and clean gun….hmmmmmmmm…
+ I knew you would be bad about the cleaning….Looks like an oil spill occured in your gun.

Regarding the night sights: Why aren’t there dots on the rear sight that would flank the front dot when align correctly?
red – the three-dot configuration is very busy during daylight shooting and many serious shooters find it distracting. However, a plain (no dot) rear doesn’t work as well under certain low-light conditions. So the single dot, especially being in a different color as it is on the Warren, provides both contrast and fast alignment under stress.

From your comments I assume that you find the 2-dot configuration (which to me looks similar to how the Heinie “straight-8” sights are set up) is preferable to a 3-dot approach, for all-around use?
I’m thinking about getting some aftermarket sights for both my M&P’s, and am really considering this 2-dot configuration, particularly the Warrens. I’ve had it on one pistol before–a Taurus–and really liked the quick acquisition you could get.

maximus — Yes, I prefer the 2-dot. It’s less cluttered when shooting in daylight and very easy to get lined up in the dark.
Any idea if he will make a single dot tritium for Sig handguns?
