Last week we looked at the LEM trigger in general, so this week let’s talk more specifically about the lEm trigger that I use right now. I have the light LEM trigger from LTT, which includes the Gray Guns short reset and flat trigger. This setup is the nicest version of the LEM I have ever used, though almost all of them are very acceptable. TLG favored a medium-ish LEM, and my copy of his favored trigger is eminently shootable. Had this been available when Todd was shooting the LEM, I’m sure he would have liked it. The short reset aspect I can live without, as my reset occurs much further out, and I do not advocate trying to find the exact reset point. On the other hand, the short reset doesn’t get in the way of anything, so it is just fine for my use.
The flat trigger on the LEM is really nice. It allows a true 90-degree trigger position when holding against the sear, and is a bit wider and less flexible than the factory shoe. Combined with the LTT trigger job on the light LEM, it really feels like a flat trigger 1911.
The weight of the light LEM trigger mitigates some of the issues that I mentioned in last week’s post. Namely, the transition from the long light slack to the sear engagement is less abrupt and less prone to cause you to move the gun when pulling the trigger at speed. Really, other than that, I find all the LEMs to be about as shootable as each other. Most shots are not fired as fast as possible, but when you do need to shoot as fast as you can, the LTT trigger really helps.
If I could create my own trigger, it would be a little narrower than the current Gray Guns flat trigger. As is, it works just fine for me, and that is especially true on the LEM. However, a slightly narrower shoe would allow better finger placement and trigger reach for the many smaller-handed people I end up working with. The wider shoe certainly makes the felt weight of the trigger seem a little less, but on a light LEM, I’m not sure I need that. On the medium LEM, it is probably about perfect, other than for smaller handed people.
Deep down, I think I still prefer DA/SA triggers, probably because of how much time I have spent with them. For people who don’t want to decock, and maybe aren’t as comfortable with a long, heavy DA pull, the light LEM from LTT is a really nice trigger, and comes so close to a good 1911 trigger, that I’m not sure what there is to dislike.
