Another drill from F.A.S.T. Wall of Famer JodyH: The 99 Drill, first posted at FirearmsTrainingAndTactics.com.
After trying it the other day, I have to say I like this drill a lot. It has so much going for it:
- serious marksmanship standard (4×6 or 3×5 cards at 7-15yd)
- reasonable time limits that will push you without making you lose control
- thirty three draws from concealment
- ten reloads from concealment
As a quick and dirty range session, it covers all the basics and more importantly it gives you enough repetitions that you actually benefit from training instead of just testing your performance once. That separates it from something like Dot Torture, which is an excellent test of marksmanship but doesn’t really have you practice any one thing enough times to be meaningful as a day-in, day-out training regimen. (I think DotTor is awesome and I use it often when teaching, but it’s a better test than it is a practice routine)
So how did I do? Using the 3×5 of a PTC target I scored a 90 out of 99.
I missed two shots on the first iteration of the first string (3 on 3×5 at 7d in 2.5sec) because I shot too fast. Once I slowed down and used the time available, I got all the hits. I missed three on the next string (1-R-2 on 3×5 at 7yd in 5sec) simply because I was rushing my press out during the draw. I missed one on the third string (3 on 3×5 at 10yd in 3.5 sec) again going too fast on the first run. Finally, I missed three — out of nine! pathetic — on the last string (3 on 3×5 at 15yd in 5sec) simply because, well, hitting a 3×5″ card forty five feet away at speed is tough!
The last string also showed me that I’m still adjusting back to the P30 when it comes to my press outs. The trigger is different enough that I’m still very hesitant with my first shot from the holster. Something to work on tomorrow…
Thanks again to JodyH for permission to post his drill. If you give this a try, let us know how you did!
Train hard & stay safe! ToddG
Looks like an interesing drill, I’ll have to give it a shot. I’ve been running Dot Torture for about a week now and well…it’s been torture.
Took this drill when Jody posted it and went to the range last Sunday. Rather than the 4×6 cards I used 4″ Circles. I LIKE IT. Scored 89 while shooting from concealment. This drill just became my down & dirty when I don’t have a lot of time drill. Works on most of the skill sets I want to work out. Very Concise.
Thanks Jody
This drill is rad.
is the 1-R-2 portion form slidelock ?
I interpreted 1-R-2 to be from slidelock.
Look’s like a great drill. Will add this to my routine.
Todd, good writeup. What drills do you recommend for day-in, day-out practice/training especially for dry firing?
Had hell on this drill today.
Shot a 65 on a 3×5.
The biggest factor was having to shoot from under a hoodie as well as my T-shirt.
That added .25-.50 second to clear the extra layer was the tipping point from controlled speed to shooting at 110%.
I was close to making my hits but was consistently tossing 1 out of every 3 shots off paper due to rushing to beat the pars.
On the bright side I managed to shoot a 5.03 FAST and a personal best on the Hackathorn standards despite the cold, wind and clothing.
so Todd, what gun are you shooting now?
wow, I see it is the P30. reading really is fundamental.
Todd
Now that for the first time in a while you’re not actively stress testing anything and you’re free to select what to carry, why select the P30 vs the M&P (PTC version or other). (Anything to do with mentioned Shot Show announcements?)
Also, how has it been no Crimson Trace for past approx two years after years of carrying Crimson Trace?
And finally, if memory serves, P30 (same as M&P) wear Warren Tactical sights vs 45 had Heine? Good to be back with Warrens????
