P30 Love

My love for the H&K P30 pistol is no secret. I still consider it the single best handgun on the market today and even though I’m enjoying the heck out of the 1911, there is no comparison in terms of reliability or ease of maintenance (not to mention that my box stock P30 was actually more accurate than my 1911).

Darryl Bolke, aka nyeti on many gun boards, has been running HK pistols since before I shot my first gun. He’s also come to be a fan of the P30 in particular. Yesterday, he posted an excellent article at Modern Service Weapons about the modifications he’s made to his personal P30 which is absolutely worth reading. Darryl can also attest to the fact that the P30 will work when fired from a Weaver stance, something probably no one else on Earth has tried. (I’m going to pay for that when I see DB at SHOT…)

  1. “afs”, I think Todd runs the “TLG” (Todd Louis Green) LEM set up that bears his name…..;).

Now, as far as the “Weaver”….:). I shoot “Weaverish”. We base what we do on our experiences. I spent most of my adult life hunting violent criminals in the dark in the urban environment. I am more married to the Harries Flashlight technique than Weaver. I shoot out of my fighting stance that works in both gun and fist-fights…they are often intertwined. Back in the 80’s I was shooting a lot competitively and shot a hard ISO. It just didn’t work to well on the street for me.

I actually tried to start shooting with a more “modern” grip. It works fine, I will just never get a slide to lock open ever again with how my hands sit. My grip works well with the giant slide release of the newer HK’s as well as the USP series that I carried for over a decade.

Todd and I tend to argue like old women about this stuff, but kevetching at each other helps to move us forward in the goal of constantly learning. I’m just waiting for that bent support arm thing to come back in vogue and I’ll be a trend setter instead of “dated”.

  2. I purchased a P30 after reading all of his test posts. I have to agree with him, the gun is nothing short of fantastic! It has become my favorite pistol!!!

  3. DB’s P30s are things of joy to shoot and I’m hoping that HK comes with a striker fired system very soon. And…it’s sure fun to shoot DB’s P30 better than he can! 🙂

  4. The P30 is phenomenal. I bought one for AIWB after lots of consideration, much of which came from your post. Over a year now and no problems; I see no reason why I would ever need another carry pistol.

  5. ““afs”, I think Todd runs the “TLG” (Todd Louis Green) LEM set up that bears his name…..;).” I´m sorry I don´t understand…. however I´ll be reading your article and try to find out… tnx for the answer…

I just finished reading the P30 history, awesome test… LEM CDA V2 with V4 lighter springs was the choice for a 6ish pound trigger pull… I really like to try this pistol out…

  6. I have two P30s now and pretty much all I shoot these days handgun wise. Carry it AIWB with a Shaggy. I have the 10-8 rear sight with the Dawson Night front and the TLG trigger set up. Match accuracy, external hammer, fully ambi, great ergonomics, 100% reliable, full size grip, short muzzle, consistent trigger pull, super low recoil and muzzle rise. What else do you want in a handgun?

  7. I have to say prior to my purchasing my P30 V3 I read your article and had to have one. It is all you indicated in more its a great gun accurate as hell and just a pleasure to shoot for a DA/SA pistol. As far as a stricker fired version goes well get a Walther PPQ its the Bomb, cant wait till you get to and endurance test on these, soon I hope.
