With only three weeks to go, we’re well on track to hit 50,000…
I spent some time this week running the F.A.S.T. with both my normal practice ammunition (American Eagle 115gr FMJ) and the load I carry (Federal 124gr +p HST). I shot them alternating between loads to avoid any benefit of warming up, etc.
With the American Eagle:
- best, 4.35 (clean): 1.43, .41 / 1.83 / .24, .15, .29
- first shot average: 1.45
- 3×5 card split average: 0.46
- reload average: 1.86
- first split on 8″ circle average: 0.24
- second split on 8″ circle average: 0.22
- third split on 8″ circle average: 0.22
- total misses: 1 head, 1 body
My best with the HST was noticeably slower, primarily because I took more time on the head shots:
- best, 4.61 (clean): 1.53, .52 / 1.86 / .23, .24, .23
- first shot average: 1.51
- 3×5 card split average: 0.51
- reload average: 1.88
- first split on 8″ circle average: 0.23
- second split on 8″ circle average: 0.21
- third split on 8″ circle average: 0.21
- total misses: 3 head
Of particular note, last week when I reported my “seven in a row” F.A.S.T. scores I averaged 1.96 on the reloads and the splits averaged to almost 0.26 seconds. This week, my reloads averaged 1.87 and my splits improved to 0.22 seconds. Would it surprise you to hear that I spent a lot of time this week working on reloads and splits?
The only negative to report this week was a failure to eject at around the 43,700 mark. It occurred during a demo at a Practice Session at the NRA Range, and I cleared it to finish the drill so didn’t really get a chance to examine it. The spent case remained completely inside the ejection port. There’s no way to tell whether it was an underpowered round or a bobble in the gun, so we have to count it against the pistol. The pistol was detail stripped and examined, but nothing of note was discovered. The gun has fired more than 2,000 rounds since without any trouble.
This weekend, the pistol flies down to Louisiana for an Aim Fast, Hit Fast class. Combined with a couple of practice sessions before next week’s P30 Thursday, we should be right around the corner from the big 50k.

Todd, what’s the plan for the P30 when the test ends? Do you plan to keep it, send it back to HK for analysis, or perhaps transition to the ultra-endurance test? 🙂
JimK — I’m definitely keeping it! The gun is scheduled to go back to HK for them to take a look at it, but it’s mine and will come back here when they’re done. Then I’ll be bringing it along to SHOT Show in Las Vegas where HK will have it on display.
I wouldn’t be surprised if that FTEject wasn’t caused by the AE ammunition. I went through 4,000 rounds of AE 115gr this summer and found 15 or more rounds that had crimped cases due to a bad seat of the bullet. I had to hand inspect every round before a match to ensure that the rounds were not crimped or mutilated during manufacturing. I have since went through all of my AE so I cannot provide a lot number. Just food for thought, in the event that you policed your brass.
I have been reading this thread for almost two months. I will be purchasing a HK P30 soon for my wife. Just wondering, who pays for your ammunition during this test?
