If you’ve been told by a former Navy SEAL and 3 USPSA Grandmasters that you should change your grip on a pistol, and you ignore their advice you are officially doing it wrong. — Caleb, GNM

  1. Finally someone said it!! Fer cryin’ out loud, Jay. Now, I know the show is edited, but his statement about not changing the fundamentals . . . aren’t the fundamentals sort of key? And the guy is a golf instructor. What does he do about people’s golf fundamentals?

Ok, got it off my chest.

  2. I should add that to his credit, the guy manages to pull off whatever task is in front of him even with that lame grip.

  3. That guy’s going to win it all… and the shooting community will join hands and cry.

  4. F-trooper,

That thought crossed my mind, too, but I don’t see it happening. So far he’s managed by the skin of his teeth. Eventually it will catch up to him.

  5. I nearly choked when he dismissed the advice on his grip, saying he wanted to learn how to shoot faster…which is exactly what the instructor was trying to help him do!

  6. “I want to hit my drives 350 yards.”
    “My grip sucks?”
“Nah… I don’t want the change my grip, I just want you to show me how to hit 350 yard drives!”
“I thought you were a golf pro?”

  7. Why do people complain about the drama and then do nothing but talk about it? Who care if he takes advice or not he won didn’t he? Could he have done even better if he’d taken the advice maybe, but smart shooters never try anything new on game day.

    just my two cents

  8. The proof is in the pudding. What works for one guy, does not perform so well for the next guy.

Ever get around “trap” shooters, one guy says you “point” the shotgun, the next 2 say you “aim” the shotgun.

Advice isn’t advice until it is asked for!

  9. Just watched this episode last night. I have to admit that I’m cautious about my conclusions about folks on the show because of the dramatic editing, and Jay does perform in that competitions. But Jay just think of how you would do if you take some of this expert advise. Especially in the end having matured as an all around shooter as the show progresses, picking up a tid bit here and a tid bit there. People pay good money to get this advise.

  10. I agree with not changing your fundamentals the day of a competition, but in previous episodes they have tried to change his grip too. The guy is a troll, as an instructor himself I am amazed that he is so dense on the instruction process.

  11. Jay = drama.

However, as much as I don’t care for him, he’s still in it.

He can get his grip wrong, but as long as he aligns the sights and doesn’t jerk the trigger, he’s hitting when others are not.

  12. But if you use this wrong grip and still shoot very well are you doing it wrong?

I was admonished by a indoor shooting range staff member once for using the ‘homie’ style method (even though I was making all head shots at 7 yards) all cause they felt I was not shooting the gun properly (yes I did it for amusement but that’s beside the point.)

    But it did work!
