It has been a while since I talked about the C&H RDS sights I have. That is because there has been nothing to report. The Comp, EDC XL, and the Duty all continue to work very well. The Duty is on a G22 and the others are on 9mm pistols. No drama with any of them.
They don’t have the same feel as my Trijicon’s or even some of the better Holosun’s, but they have done everything asked just as well as those others. They also cost a fair bit less. When you need to outfit a bunch of guns for some testing, or guns that you are not using very seriously but want to shoot occasionally with an RDS on board, the C&H options are very appealing. They probably work just fine for more serious stuff as well, but in my case, I stick to issued optics.
A more recent development that I don’t have any experience with is their direct mount optics for various factory-cut guns. They look like a much better option than the Holosun version that I have. If any of you have used them, please let me know about your experience in the comments.
On another note, though I have written in the past about being a fan of occluding the dot for training purposes, I think the concept may be somewhat misunderstood. When shooting an RDS fast and accurately it is better to look at the target. If accuracy is your only goal, that doesn’t really matter and you can look at the dot. Some of the most accurate shooters prefer to look at the dot when shooting groups. Occluding the dot helps people who have a hard time keeping both eyes open. It is the fastest way to get people to keep both eyes open. It does not force a target focus. You can look at the occluded dot and still see the target and still line things up. To paraphrase an old ad campaign, “Only YOU can look at the target.” RDS covers will not do it for you.
I know some of you have been waiting very patiently to hear more about the Shadow 2. I’m sorry it has been so long. I need to make time to film a little video with it and then I will write it up. Hopefully soon.
Interesting. With all of the people out there for quite some time now advocating occlusion for training purposes, as far as I recall, all say it is for target focus. I will have to think on this but you may have just corrected a misconception.
I think vision is a complex issue and is experienced differently for everyone. It is certainly possible that some people get some target focus benefit from occlusion, but if you test it, you can easily see that you are able to focus on the dot while it is occluded. I certainly can, though i still train occluded some of the time anyway.
I just recently got the metal M&P 2.0 in .40 and set it up with Floyds magwell and base pads and a Holosun 507C-GR, learning about scope plate compatibility was something new for me, with helpful advice from several I was lead to Calculated Kinetics for a metal scope plate, it is of the finest quality and fit. Just got it all tricked out Tuesday of this week, now the struggle to find time to shoot it a d sight in the green dot. I’ve got some good pictures of the assembly and finished setup if there is a way to send them to you
Sounds like a good setup!
