Retirement

I am now officially retired from federal law enforcement. I spent 17 years with the FBI, 6 years with the Diplomatic Security Service, and 4 years with the NYPD, for 27 years of good times. Each agency offered many unique opportunities for development, and I feel privileged to have been able to spend my career the way I did.

Moving forward, I intend to increase both civilian and LE training opportunities and hope to meet and shoot with as many of you as my schedule allows. If any of you guys are also motorcycle riders, even better. I have a few more classes that are being finalized for this year, and then we will already be into next year!

Most of the shooters who come to my classes are using RDS-equipped pistols these days, but iron sights are certainly still represented. One agency I have recently talked to about training is carrying traditional DA/SA autos (at least for the time being). I have to admit that this surprised me a bit, but it was a most welcome surprise. As many of you probably know, I am a huge fan of the DA auto and prefer to carry and shoot that system over all others.

I don’t normally do equipment-specific classes, like “Super-Duper RDS Instructor” or AIWB for the Advanced Underwater Knife Fighting Specialist”, but if there is any interest in doing a class focused on mastering the traditional DA auto, I think that would be a lot of fun. If that sounds interesting to any of you, please drop me a line and let me know.

I should also clarify that while gear-specific classes are not my focus, since there is so much misunderstanding out there about using red dots, I would be happy to do an RDS class for anyone interested in that. Everywhere I go, people are still struggling with aspects of using the dot-equipped pistol and are especially struggling to teach it to shooters who might be charitably described as less interested than they are.

That’s all for now, train hard and stay safe!

  1. congratulations on your retirement, however your retirement is making me question my career choice, as I am about to meet the 51 year mark in my profession, have been drawing my social security for 4 years and am still working 66 hour work weeks, I maybe having a small level of envy lol. Wasn’t aware that you are a motorcycle rider ? what do your ride ? I am what I identify as a “has been Harley rider”, don’t have a bike any longer, but I still miss my “79” XLS. My wife and I spent every weekend that the weather was good on the Harley from 79 to 1982 when our daughter was born, then I rode by myself for several additional years, had to sell the bike and my “55” Chevy when we fell on hard financial times, thankfully we got back on our feet before I had to start selling firearms. Again congratulations, enjoy every minute with your girls

    1. Thank you. Another way to look at it is that my chosen profession has a cap where I cannot or should not continue doing it. You chose a profession that allows you to continue to contribute and work. Seems like a good choice, though 66 hours a week gets old for sure. I ride several different kinds of bikes, but just picked up a Road King – my first Harley. So far, so good!

      1. if I could get a bike again today, I would love to have a 2016 Low Rider S, but at my age, I do have occasional balance issues, so best I stay a “has Been Harley rider”

the 66 hour work weeks doesn’t give much free time to enjoy life. Shooting is my favorite recreational activity. When Lipsey’s Exclusive’s offered the new 629 and 686 Mountain guns without the “safety” holes, I ordered both. Two months and the 629 came in, still waiting on the 686. Have had the 629 two weeks now and still haven’t shot it. ( and I have a pistol range right out my back door too) These are the first new S&W revolvers I have bought since the safety holes. I have to say I am very pleased with the fit, finish and quality of this 629, but I do miss the forger hammer and triggers

        1. The Low Rider S is a nice bike. I was tempted by a Heritage Classic for a bit as well. The new S&W’s are nice and I agree about the forged parts being missed. Nonetheless, none of my MIM parts have failed me, though I don’t put a large number of full power rounds through my mountain guns.

  2. Congratulations on retirement! That is a milestone in life. Its great that you have a retirement gig lined up, teaching shooting. I bet you will have fun doing that.

  3. Congratulations! I started retirement life one year ago and I highly recommend it.

    1. Congratulations to you! I am already having a hard time getting everything done, I don’t know how I managed to have a career at the same time!
