SIG P228R at 10,000 Rounds

PPGMD recently posted on M4Carbine.net about his new SIG P228R. In a little over one year he’s put over 10,000 rounds through the pistol. He provides a description of what parts show wear. But even better, he took close up pictures of all the gun’s parts when the gun was new, at 5,000 rounds, and now at 10,000. It’s a photo diary showing the progress of the wear.

Photo arrays:

The P228R remains his everyday concealed carry gun, but he’s switching to a P229R as his day to day training pistol.

Thanks to PPGMD for the great photos and the report.

  1. Doh I just realized my own error, the start date was 03/25/2009, I mistyped 2010.

  2. I didn’t even know they made the 228s anymore, much less a railed version. But then again, it’s hard to keep up with SIG’s gun of the week trends.

My progression of carry guns in the last 14 years has been: Glock 19, SIG P225, Glock 26, SIG P228, Glock 19.

All good guns, but at the time the 228 magazines were about 3 times what a preban Glock 19 mag cost and they tended to rattle unless downloaded by 1 round.

  3. @Jason – My understanding is that these 228Rs are essentially stamped P228 slides on P229 frames.

  4. Watch it,
I got yelled at when I starting asking to many questions about those sights.

  5. It would have been even cooler to have made measurements of various dimensions before and after wear – just to see where it is most prone to wear, and what parts should be replaced and how often, etc…

  6. Todd,

No problem, these photo series are as much for my own documentation as they are for other people.

    Lydia,

Sig already has a part replacement schedule that they give out at Armorer classes. But outside of the springs, take down lever, firing pin, roll pins, and extractor they are a pretty much replace when broken (if you wear out any of the other parts, someone else is likely paying for your ammo).

The replacement schedule pretty much matches Todd’s experiences based on his post here:
