Target Update

For the past week, I have been using the first run of the upcoming pistol-training.com target for practice. This same target will also be used this weekend at the Indianapolis Aim Fast, Hit Fast class. Because so many people have been asking, here is an update.

First, the target is going through some changes:

  • The outside target zone (squared body shape) is getting modified slightly to lower the shoulders to a more realistic point.
  • The 3×5 head box zone is getting raised slightly to a more realistic position.
  • The overall target width is being shrunk from 24″ to 20″.

After this weekend, other changes may become self evident.

Second, so far the target design has been fulfilling its purpose pretty well. It’s possible to shoot everything from Dot Torture, Press Six, and 3-Two-1 to basic marksmanship and speed practice. Obviously, it’s also a very convenient target for the F.A.S.T. It will certainly never be all things to all people, but it will be an all-in-one solution for the drills used in pistol-training.com classes.

Finally, a number of people have asked if the target will be made available for sale. Right now, the best available answer is, hopefully. The final decision on that will depend primarily on whether the target producer (National Target Company) sees adequate demand to justify warehousing them and offering them up on their site.

(and yes, this post would have been a lot more interesting with photos… but I used up all the targets before getting any decent pictures… hopefully, there will be some pics from this weekend’s class)

  1. Todd;

    IS the bottle shape the same dimensions as the FBI Q target? It the HK45 pic it looks a little elongated. You can add me to the list of people that are interested in the final product.

  2. rsa — To the best of my knowledge, it is a standard Q bottle. The target is actually based on the IALEFI Q.

  3. Count me in if they become available. I will buy some and probably my club.

  4. wow if National Targets website was a bit better, one might be able to find a working link to request that they stock these targets.
    Guess we’ll just wait and see.

  5. Correction: The awesome folks at National Target actually printed out the updated version and sent that to Indy! We used them all day and I am mostly happy. The only negative is that if you have a well worn backer and there is sunlight coming from behind the targets, it shines through and makes the targets look like urban camo. Nothing to be done about it, really. Just a fact of life with paper targets. I wonder what it would cost to get some cardboard ones made…

  6. If these are the same “milk bottle” as the IALEFI Q targets then they would be even more useful for many of us.
    My state qual course uses the Q target, having this target for training and being able to also use it for quals would be useful at times.
