TDA Version of Dot Torture

A while back, Sean Leffler recommended this Traditional Double Action version of the classic Dot Torture drill and I put a target together but never posted it. Now that I’m getting back into TDA shooting, I thought perhaps it would be useful to others who are doing the same. With thanks to Sean:

  1. Looks great!
I’ll do this on my next range trip in a week or so. With the original DT I always ran all rounds DA on any dot that called for a single round multiple times and (of course) first round DA on multiple round strings.

  2. Don’t thank me. It was Sean’s idea and his effort. I just made the target. Which if you think about it, is exactly all I did for the original, too, because that wasn’t my drill, either.

  3. Todd, would this be a good one for running the LEM as well and just using the S/A as shot from reset?

I’ve only shot dot torture once at someone’s class, but should probably be incorporating it into the regular routine.

  4. I always use the normal one for everything when I teach, telling folks to decock whenever the gun comes down from firing position.

This is just a bonus for dedicated TDA use.

  5. Thank you for putting this together. What paper size should I print this on?

  6. Regular 8.5×11 typing paper, though personally I like to use card stock because it resists tears from the bullets and makes scoring easier.

  7. This dovetails nicely with the new Rogers
Tap Rack Training Aid (TRT). It occurred to me that the TRT could be used in livefire, as well, for ball and dummy drills. It would take the place of dummy rounds that end up all over the range and get lost.

Using a mag with the TRT for the second shot will diagnose a lot of trigger jerking issues.

  8. Thank you for posting this test. I ran it today with my p226 and it’s going to be one I stock in my range bag.

  9. Can you add this to the Drills page so we don’t have to search for it in the future? Thanks you Sean and Todd.
