Many of our readers have been asking for detailed instructions on the “JohnO Sight” that has been pictured here lately. Well, the wait is over. John O. Stewart has written up a detailed step by step procedure that is easy for anyone to follow. I’ve personally been using this “sight” for a while now and it’s definitely a great way to achieve high visibility without sacrificing precision … or spending a lot of money!

Many thanks to JohnO for the detailed instructions. For those of you planning on trying this, Trimbrite tape is available at Ace hardware stores. For initial investment of about 4 bucks, I may go into the fluorescent sight business!
Two things worth mentioning; degreasing is essential and I used a slightly different method to trim the excess tape to fit.
Once the piece is stuck on the front sight, use the side of your exacto knife to rub against the tape along the edges of the sight. After a minute or so on each of the three exposed edges, it’ll be trimmed.

you can get a punch at a hobby store or leather shop. i’m probably going to give this a try over the weekend but i don’t have night-sights so i’ll just cover the whole sight edge.
My thanks, too, for an easy-to-follow procedure complete with pictures. I simply followed the directions and 10 minutes later I had a perfect “hi-viz” front sight. I can pick up my front sight faster than ever – range tested!
Haven’t had a chance to shoot it yet, but I did the whole front blade on my P226, sans night sights. Easy to do, the tape was cheap too.
Its amazingly bright during the day, and actually somewhat still visible in pretty dim light which is cool.

I have Heinie Straight Eights on my G17. I am wanting to add the red tape to the front sight but the sight blade is serrated. Does anyone know/have experience with attaching the tape to a serrated sight?
Interesting idea, though I remember reading somewhere (TruGlo website??) that red sights are better for daylight hours while green/yellow sights are better for night/dusk hours. I wonder if green would be a better choice for a defensive arm. Anybody try a different color?
Dave — Since I add it to my regular night sights, I’m not worried about its visibility in reduced lighting. No matter what color the tape is, it won’t be suitable as a stand-alone low light option.
