What I found interesting was when they got to the combat range. They were scoring named courses of fire, based on real-life scenarios, in points per second, long before IPSC formed in the 1970s.
Look at those revolvers recoil. It’s only a .38 guys, try to hold it like a man, would ya? I guess I shouldn’t be too hard on the old timey guys. If they really shot once a month, that’s about 10 times more a year than many current officers shoot.
SHO at 25 yards and no sniveling! Better than the peg board (holes from side to side and top to bottom) targets that I have seen officers shoot locally.
I have an old (same time frame I think) black and white video/film of FBI training. It is no where near as long, nor does it include the “Exhibition” shooting, but the same shooting style(s); doing reloads from the pocket 1 round at a time, etc…
I’m assuming this film was made somewhere between 1939-40? I noticed 1938 on the board explaining the slow fire/rapid fire course, but, the Ford the Rookie drove up in, was a ’39-40 Ford, (mid-year car) I wonder how many of these guys enlisted when the war started? I wonder too, how many made it back.. In a way, what we got to see here, is a glimse(and a small one at that) of what it was like in America, before WWII, when a guy could save his coins and when he had enough, go to the hardware store, or gun shop, and buy that new 1911, for $25 or so.. and walk right out the door with it. No waiting periods,4473 forms, nothing.. How many of you caught the naval officers at the end of the film shooting 1911’s?.. BTW..I loved the music..
Don’t know of any of my peers I would trust to shoot the cigarette out of my mouth….. They would look at it as an opportunity to create a promotional spot for the next guy on the list….

I wasn’t expecting to see cross-body draws.
I liked the target’s narrow A-zone — just the spine and brain-stem, really — but the iconic heart off to the side was pretty silly.
I feel like we should have an old-school, strong-hand-only, revolver day at the local club match some time.
