Springfield/Warren 9mm 1911 Endurance Test: Report #8

14,116 rounds 8 stoppages 0 malfunctions 0 parts breakages
5 mags deadlined

Given the events earlier this week, it seemed appropriate to provide a quick update.

Between this month’s KSTG match and a long practice session, the SACS/Warren gun fired 1,108 rounds without any stoppages shooting a mix of 124gr +p HST carry ammo and 124gr mil-spec Cleanfire 54882  practice ammo. At least a few hundred of those rounds were fired using the same two magazines that were in the gun when the dramatic stoppages occurred this past Monday.

It’s too early to draw conclusions, but hopefully this is a good sign.

Also during Wednesday’s practice, I was able to shoot some benchmarks for performance comparison to earlier in the test. Using the F.A.S.T. as my yardstick, my average has improved by 0.28 seconds over the past six weeks. My draw is a little faster, my accuracy on the 3×5 shots was more consistent, and my reloads sped up a bit, too. Nonetheless, the reloads still averaged a sad 2.38 seconds. Oh well… I knew from the beginning that the reload was the manipulation that would take by far the most time and effort to get right. That’s certainly been the case.

Shooting the Drill of the Week, I was able to get down to a 0.86 second draw from concealment. I was certainly happy with that, though most of the draws were between 1.00 and 1.10 seconds. Building off that, I worked on 4-shot draws (8″ circle at 7yd) and was very consistently able to score all hits under 1.6 seconds. The VCD Grips that I mentioned last time definitely made a real difference when working at that speed.

It looks like I’ll get in one more short practice Friday before heading up to Pittsburgh for Aim Fast Hit Fast. Look for another update next week.

  1. Regarding the 1911 and durability and the recent brew-haha over the Colt Rails guns / USMC testing, how does the Springfield appear to be holding up at the 14K mark given the pace at which it’s been shot?

Obviously we will keep in mind that this is the 9mm and not the .45atomnuclearmankiller…

    But just curious.

  2. Todd,

I think you’re probably on the right track just keeping the thing lubed. I’m curious to see how long it can go without cleaning as long as it’s lubricated, since most of your problems have occured right after cleaning.
