As the M&P Test continues (50,000 rounds in six months), it took eighteen days to reach 5,000. S&W sent a higher front sight to compensate for my “drive the dot” sight picture compared to the more traditional use of the top edge of the front sight. Warren Tactical sent one of their rear sights, too, which will only be on the gun until the upcoming Warren night sight becomes available. With the help of the people at Virginia Arms the gun is now perfectly zeroed.
Here is the gun sporting the new XTI Procyon weaponlight sent to us by our friends at Insight Tech-Gear. And yes, that is the fancy blanket here at the hotel in Ellijay, Georgia … home of Rogers Shooting School. As reported in the last M&P Monday, all week the gun (and I) will be down here at Rogers going through their intensive 5-day 2,500-round shooting program.
Details about both the class and how the M&P9 performed will be included in next week’s report. Three of our five instructors are carrying M&P’s themselves, and it was gratifying when two of them expressed interest in getting the same “hard reset” trigger job I showed them on my personal gun. How low was it shooting? Mine seems to suffer a similar problem. Even at close distances it seems to need a bit of a triangluar shape to the dots and the dot on the target otherwise it shoots low.
It wasn’t shooting low, it was shooting about 3″ high. Are you shooting low or low & left?
I just got my second M&P 9 and it’s shooting about 6″ high at 25 yards with the stock sights. I am going to change the rear to a Warren Tactical for sure and will seek a higher front sight. Todd, what is the stock front sight height? Who makes varied height front sights right now for the M&P?

It began as a little low/left, but I adjusted my grip slightly (with some tutelage from a more experienced shooter) and got it fairly centered, but it still seemed like I was having to adjust my sight picture to get the right elevation. I’m not an expert shooter by any stretch. I was mostly curious by the fact your factory gun wasn’t “zeroed” to your satisfaction. And I suppose I misunderstood the phrase “drive the dot”. Fixed sights are kind of new to me and I was curious to know what to expect out of a standard factory gun.
Wayne — the Warrens aren’t supposed to change POI at all, so you might just need a taller front sight (available from Smith).
Miller14STL — If you’re shooting low, it’s much more likely to be a function of anticipation or trigger manipulation problems. Try the “Wall Drill” and “Ball & Dummy Drill” listed in the Drills section of the site here and see if that helps you diagnose the problem.
Well you are the first people I know of to have the XTI Procyon. I wonder how the beam compares to the Surefire X300. These two are the top of the line in weaponlights and some comparison beamshots would be really helpful in helpingshow which one has the edge. I’m ready to buy one but want the best. The Surefire has the name but the XTI has the advantage of a strobe mode which is neat.
