P30 Thursday: Week Thirty

65,250 rounds
9 stoppages, 0 malfunctions, 3 parts breakages

More than 4,000 rounds this week! To be honest, I didn’t even realize I’d been shooting that much.

Most of my range time this week has been devoted to playing around with my grip technique more. This led me to swap out the Large left side grip panel on the gun in favor of the Medium. Originally, I’d chosen the Large in part to help keep my left palm from riding the slide release lever. But when I switched the backstrap from Medium to Small, it changed the relationship between the bases of my palms. Using the narrower side panel essentially allows my support hand to stay in contact with the strong hand while being farther forward… giving me both a stronger grip on the gun and further avoiding the slide release lever.

The pistol continues to run fine, and has gone about 6,000 rounds since the last time it was cleaned. I did have more problems with the 124gr American Eagle TMJ “Toxic-Metal Free” ammo. A handful of misfires and another light load that went pop instead of bang… forcing me to stop and check the bore for a trapped bullet. Luckily, it had enough power to clear the muzzle. Just to be sure it’s the ammo and not the gun, I pulled two thousand rounds of different ammo from my personal stock for part of the shooting I did this week, and that all went bang without a hiccup. What’s up with that, ATK?

See you next week.

Train hard & stay safe! ToddG

  1. How does the altering of the grip panels effect your weak hand grip? Or are you more concerned with strong hand/two handed grip as that is the “average” method of presentation?

I’ve been eagerly anticipating the arrival of the P30S/P30LS and it’s nice to actually get this level of info on the P30, there’s not much well written / documented use on the gun out there.
