“The Rotation” — a Pet Peeve

Tam at View From The Porch strikes a chord with her recent post entitled “If this is Tuesday, I must be carrying the Luger…

The whole concept of a “CCW rotation” has never made any sense to me.

  • .45 in the winter, 9mm in the summer? You’ve clearly been sleeping during the past 20 years of ammunition development.
  • snubbie .38 in the summer, Desert Eagle in the winter? You must live someplace where indoor heating hasn’t been discovered yet.
  • 1911 most days but LCP when you feel like wearing tight jeans? Don’t. Wear. Tight. Jeans.
  • You wear your P228 when you’re wearing brown shoes because you have a brown holster for it, but your G19 when wearing black shoes because you have a black holster for that? Go chew on a chicken bone.

Certainly there are circumstances which might dictate against carrying your normal everyday handgun of choice. Having a smaller, lighter gun for those occasions is understandable. But it should be something you do out of necessity. Choose a suitable gun of suitable size, shootability, and power and then learn to work your habits and wardrobe around that gun. A pistol isn’t jewelry. Don’t be a SIMP!

  1. I’ve never really fallen into the true “rotation,” but until recently, I flip-flopped between two handguns for carry (a P229 .40 and a P30). My simplified rotation is no more. I am strictly a P30 man, now. I carry my P30 with me everywhere I can comfortably conceal it. For those days I can’t conceal the P30, I’m carrying a P2000SK V3 DA/SA, same manual of arms, smaller package. I am really digging the same or similar manual of arms approach for all of my handgun needs.

I’ve since traded and/or sold all of my Glocks, M&Ps, and now my Sigs are funding additional HK pistols (same manual of arms). Not to mention the added benefit to your shooting, how about simplified holsters, magazines, etc.

  2. I agree 100%. When someone tells me there is no way they can carry anything bigger than an LCP with their shorts and T-Shirt setup, I usually lift up my t-shirt to reveal my full size 1911. Find the right gun, modify the wardrobe and habits to fit.

  3. +1000. I’ll never understand the so-called “carry rotation”, even worse though is the guys who carry multiple guns but almost never shoot them all and have no idea which is more reliable than another, let alone reliable enough for carry purposes…

I carry an M&P9FS that’s seen thousands of rounds and only carry a crummy PF-9 when I absolutly have to (sadly though, the M&P is going away soon for a G17 since it likes to break strikers all too often and I don’t like not being able to clean the extractor easily).

  4. G27 w/ G23 spare mag. Always. Everywhere. Same is true with the wife, only G19 w/ spare mag. Same is true w/ all four kids. We don’t know much about many guns, but we know our Glocks for sure.

I’ve never personally known anyone who “rotated”. That to me is possibly the worst idea I’ve ever heard for a CHL holder.

To me, it’s kinda like Oprah Winfrey… She’s fat, She’s thin, She’s fat, She’s thin…. Pick a weight and go with it. (sorry guys, my wife made me do it!)

  5. Rotating carry pistols make about as much sense as wearing diffent size shoes every day.

  6. I now live in a state where it’s almost impossible to get a CCW but to this day I still buy my jeans a size larger out of habit because I needed the extra room to carry my Glock 26 with an IWB holster.

Having carried that Glock 26 all the freaking time the thing I noticed more than the length or height was the width. I’ve decided that if I moved to a state where I could get a CCW again I’d probably go with a Walther PPS or something slim like that.

  7. well at least you mention that my Desert Eagle is a legit carry gun.

seriously dude, I’ve got a concealment rig for it and everything!

  8. I have a rotation, I rotate between my duty Glock 17, my off-duty G19 and my match/game gun G34.

I also rotate between my 642 in my pocket and, well, my other 642 in my pocket.

Wait, not the same thing, never mind.

  9. Yep! Makes as little sense to me as all the federal agencies having different pistols, or the services different battle rifles/uniforms…
