P30 Thursday: Week Forty-One

90,736 rounds
10 stoppages, 0 malfunctions, 5 parts breakages

90,000 rounds! Another eventful week with the P30, though the gun didn’t see as many range days or rounds as usual.

The pistol had five failures to extract this week, all of them due to ammo issues.

The first occurred during the Aim Fast, Hit Fast class in Sacramento. While shooting a demo, a round of 115gr Blazer (aluminum) only made it part way out of the chamber before the slide came crashing home. Examination of the case after class was over showed a deformed cartridge rim.

The last four all happened within a 1,200 round session at the NRA Range shooting a new lot of 124gr American Eagle FMJ. Four of cases split open in the chamber, sticking tight enough that the extractor rode right over the rim in recoil. It appears to be a material failure with the cases being improperly annealed by the manufacturer. If the problem continues, a call to ATK for replacement will be in order.

Otherwise, everything is running well. Many of the students in the Sacramento class helped make sure I didn’t have any ammunition left to ship home. Comments among those who tried the P30 were very positive. None of them was hit in the face with a flying slide, so apparently the damage to the frame (as reported last week) has not compromised the pistol’s function.

The P30 will be used in two classes this weekend (Speed Kills and the monthly NRA Practice Session) and hopefully a few good practice sessions leading up to the Aim Fast, Hit Fast in Ohio the following weekend.

  1. After watching you shoot the P30 this year I really wanted to try one out but I can’t even find a store that stocks HK let alone find a range that has one for rent.

  2. 5 case issues all in one week? Is there anything about the pistol that could be related? Chamber dirty enough that just slightly larger than normal cases get stuck? Barrel fouled enough that there’s more than normal pressure?

  3. Todd,
Have you ever had that many ammo related issues in such a short time before?
With the bad rounds coming from ATK it kinda worries me as Fed HST’s are my prime carry ammo.

You just never know and that’s one really good reason to carry a BUG.

  4. When my Beretta 92F started doing this I asked my gunsmith to clean/examine the extractor and extractor channel. He did it and the problems continued. Despite no apparent damage or wear to the extractor I asked that it be replaced, once done, no problems.

  5. Have a couple questions for you Todd as you are probably the best informed person outside of HK USA. Is there any possible way to get a p30 armorers manual right now, do you even have a copy? Also can the slide release of the safety version be dropped into a regular p30? Thanks!

  6. Andrew — Armorer manuals are given out at HK Armorer School classes only, to the best of my knowledge.

The P30S slide release lever will fit on a standard P30, yes.
