Two New Drills

Two more drills have been added to the Drills Page.

The first drill, by popular demand from the Speed Kills students last weekend, is 3-Two-1. To be honest, it’s something I threw together rather haphazardly but so many people asked me to email them a copy of the target, it seemed like a good idea to post it.

This drill is all about getting fast hits on small targets under time pressure. Draw and fire three rounds at the 3×5 rectangle; then two rounds at the 2″ circle; then 1 round at the 1″ square. (see target image left; the drill page has a link to a full size .pdf version)

In class, we do this at five yards with a 4 second PAR time. Shooting a 3×5 card suddenly seems very easy after you’ve been forced to hit a 1″ square on demand.

The second drill, first mentioned here in P30 Thursday: Week Forty, has been christened Press Six. It uses six 2″ circles to practice proper press-outs and sight tracking. Again, a printable target in the form of a .pdf file is available on the drill’s page.

Give them a try and let us know what you think.

  1. Looks like an interesting drill and the fact that you have to transition DOWN to the next target instead of using recoil to transition up or sideways (as in most drills) makes it even better. Will give this one a whirl and see how many cuss words issue!

  2. Tried both of these drills today, both at 3 yards. Press Six was challenging but I was pretty much able to run the drill with no issues. OTOH,3-Two-1 was a real bitch and quite the challenge. I never managed to run it clean, though I did get my speed dialed-in.

So I need to move my Press Six back to 4 yards and keep working at the 3 on 3-Two-1…

  3. 3-2-1 is a new favorite of mine precisely because of the difficulty of switching between a big target to a small target to an unreasonably tiny target. I shot the drill clean every run we did during the “Speed Kills” class because I was finally refining my sight picture based on the target I had to hit without conscious thought.
